About the Book

Clammy is a nonfiction book-in-progresspart memoir, part narrative journalism, part medical historywhich tells the stories of those living with hyperhidrosis. A surprisingly common yet misunderstood medical condition, HH is characterized by chronic, excessive blushing or sweating—sometimes liters of sweat daily—in focused areas such as the hands, feet, armpits or face.

As many as 211 million people worldwide suffer from HH, including many for whom the severity is great enough to invoke crippling depression, social anxiety and suicidal thoughts or behavior. Unfortunately, compared to other equally prevalent conditions, very little non-biased research or writing exists on the topic.

The mission of Clammy is to raise awareness about hyperhidrosis through in-depth research and meaningful storytelling, as well as deliver comfort and resources to those who suffer from it.

    1. Thank you for your comment, Gillian. I’m really glad to be working on this project. It’s a way for me to create something positive and useful from my own struggles with HH, and create the resource for others that I always wish existed for me. Thanks for your interest and enthusiasm!

    1. Kyle,

Thank you for the comment. I’m grateful to whomever shared my survey on the hyperhidrosis subreddit, which I just discovered myself a few days ago. You do a wonderful job moderating it.

I’ve gotten amazing response to the survey in the 24ish hours since I published it, so I’m extremely grateful to all who’ve taken time to answer my long-winded questions. I’m forever amazed by two things: (1) the incredible diversity in personal experiences of those suffering from hyperhidrosis, and (2) the equally incredible universality of our experiences.

Thanks again for all you’ve done for the HH community on Reddit, and I look forward to being in touch more in the future! I think you and I are on the same page with wanting to transform our own struggles into something positive by helping others.

      Keep it up.

  1. I have always wanted to write this book! I have had HH for my entire life (my mom talks about my “snail trail” as a crawling baby), and I want to people to know that this is a medical condition, not something to be made fun or light of! Keep working! I will definitely buy it.

    1. Thanks for the comment and support of the project, Allison! I agree that it’s important to help those who are unfamiliar with HH understand that it is a serious medical condition with often profound effects on people’s lives.

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting here, Diana. I’m so glad Jade shared this link with you. I love your website and the fact that you’ve been open about your hyperhidrosis, especially so positive about it. That’s not always easy to do! We’ll be in touch as, indeed, it would be great to work on something together to help raise more awareness.

Keep up all your wonderful, positive energy!

  3. I found myself in your website because I have been reading up on this again. Just a few days ago, I found out that my toddler is uncomfortable holding hands with me when my hands starts sweating. I can’t say I blame the kid. I must say, it is really disheartening to know that I will have to resort to wearing gloves when I hold my kid’s hand. I remember being pregnant and specifically praying that my baby does not inherit this condition.

I’ve had this condition ever since I was a baby and it was a challenge growing up with hyperhidrosis I’ve learned to deal with it as I got older and it really does get easier. I have even met a few who have it just as bad as I do. The stories and experiences we tell each other are all too familiar that we could not help but laugh.

We even agreed that one of the worst things people tell us is “It’s all in your head! That’s clearly psychological.”

I am looking forward to reading this book and I am extremely glad that you are raising awareness about this condition. All the best to you!
